About Elizabeth W. Barrett, MA, LMFT:
Elizabeth is a licensed marriage and family therapist with 20 years of experience in the helping professions, host of A Conversation with The Reluctant Therapist – a weekly radio program on Public Radio KCBX (kcbx.org), a lecturer in the Psychology/Child Development department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California and a mental health consultant/speaker specializing in personal growth, family life and relationship issues.
Elizabeth graduated with an MA in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute (1993) with a focus on Depth Psychology utilizing dream work, the arts and ancient wisdom to address the struggles experienced in our complex modern lives. Elizabeth interned with the County of San Luis Obispo as a crisis/in-home counselor for a child abuse prevention program. During this experience Elizabeth focused on parenting and communication skills as the keys to individual health and well-being within the family system. This work lead to an opportunity to create The Parent Way (5 Steps to Building a Fabulous Family), a video series and workbook that she wrote and hosted, which has been a recurring segment on the local cable access station and has also been used in various parent training programs.
Elizabeth’s love for radio and passion for working with those who are struggling with personal and relationship issues; and a growing frustration with the disease/medical-model of treatment prevalent in the helping professions – lead to the creation of her show, The Reluctant Therapist. These original 15 minute - Ted Talk-type segments began airing on KCBX in 2009.
In January 2013 - A Conversation with The Reluctant Therapist moved to its new weekly one hour spot featuring listener calls around a relational topic concerning our collective mental health and well-being. Previous shows can be podcast at KCBX.org or at Elizabeth’s webite: thereluctanttherapist.com

Traditional Chinese Medicine can be utilized as a comprehensive philosophy or lens in which to view our health. It’s ancient wisdom teaches us ways to nourish ourselves, strengthen our immune systems (so we don’t get diseases later in life, even the ones that run in our families), release toxins gently and naturally, harmonize emotional imbalances and promote radiant health. What is your energy level like on a scale of 1 to 10? What is your stress level like on a scale of 1 to 10? These are everyday questions in my practice and the answers I receive are shockingly similar. People’s energy is low and stress is way too high. Our energy quality and sense of ease is a reflection of our life, the juiciness of our experiences, the essence of what makes life fabulous.
Qi gong dates back to the Warring States Era in China in the fifth century BCE, when it was first founded as a healing art to preserve health and vitality. Qi gong encompasses physical exercises, meditation and visualization, along with breathing exercises. All of the most effective techniques have remained over the centuries, as they are time tested, and thrive at bringing people a self healing modality as well as control over our aging process. A regular Qi gong practice is linked to the prevention and healing of disease, reduced stress, improved physical strength , improved mental function, improved sexual function (more libido-fun) and spiritual enrichment. And best of all, it slows down the aging process! Who wouldn't want to try it!
