Pilates Style

At 7,000 feet of elevation, doing Pilates in an open-air studio and gazing out at views like these, it’s hard not to feel high. Our small group of retreaters has settled onto our mats, with ladder arcs, therabands, foam rollers and Magic Circles at our sides, waiting for STOTT-certified instructor Nicole Currie to begin the morning’s session. Even in summer the morning air is cool and crisp—cool enough that Nicole has lit a fire to keep us toasty.

Is it the dry air, the towering cacti and flaming flora, or the spirits on the whistling wind? There’s something about Mexico that gets under your skin, drawing you back time and again. Finding Sagrada, a true wellness center in the hills overlooking lovely art-colony San Miguel in central Mexico, was dumb luck. Owned and run by a young California couple, it’s small but spacious, sincere, and inspiring. Architect Scott designed and built the cabanas and outbuilding. Wife Eva Inglizian is both a licensed acupuncturist and an amazing cook. You can come whenever you like, but you might want to time your visit to coincide with a retreat from their ever expanding roster, which includes yoga/pilates, cooking, and East-West medicine. During the yoga/Pilates week, usually led by Scott’s dancer-sister Nicole, you’ll enjoy breakfast, an invigorating yoga class and a heart-pumping hike (affording killer views), then lunch, siesta and an afternoon session of a STOTT Pilates class that segues into a restorative yoga session. Evenings begin with a cocktail-hour mixer featuring mango margaritas or prickly pear cactus fruit margaritas, plus homemade salsa and chips. Our group bonded so deeply we never left the dinner table before 11pm.

A Place where Wellness is Sacred

By Christine Hassler

I boarded a red-eye flight to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, mentally and physically exhausted, hoping that where I was headed would bring some balance back into my life. My destination? The East Meets West Retreat at the Sagrada Wellness Center.

When I arrived at Sagrada, I was greeted by Scott Currie and Eva Inglizian, the couple responsible for this intimate, all-inclusive, eco-friendly resort nestled in the mountains outside the colonial town of San Miguel. My retreat began the moment I stepped foot on Sagrada ground. I was immediately whisked away by Inglizian, an acupuncturist and the spa director, for an acupuncture treatment to combat my headache and jetlag.

The official retreat began with an introduction by Eva Inglizian and her father, Dr. George Inglizian, the guest M.D. and psychotherapist. Eva explained that the mission of this retreat was “to promote optimal wellness by mingling the philosophies and traditions of both traditional and alternative medical care with just the right dose of pampering.”

First on the agenda was an in-depth, one-on-one consultation with both George and Eva to address my overall health from an Eastern and Western perspective. Everything from taking my blood pressure to assessing my chi was covered and assessed. The two docs then converged to create a treatment plan to address my main health concerns: stress and depletion.

Topping the list of recommended treatments was Sagrada’s signature Acu-Facial Rejuvenation, which combines acupuncture, essential oils, and facial massage. Each day thereafter, I underwent several profound sessions of Acupuncture Modulated Psychotherapy (AMP), created specifically for this retreat. The AMP treatment begins by focusing on the breath as acupuncture needles are placed along emotional and grounding meridians found on the ears and feet. As I felt a rush of emotions coming up, the talk therapy began. George was there to soothe me through my tears as we discussed healthier lifestyle choices and thoughts I could commit to.

The acupuncture and therapy treatments were complimented by a two-hour yoga and Pilates–blended class each morning. The outdoor Yoga Pavilion designed by Currie, the eco-conscious architect behind Sagrada, offers panoramic views of the vast and lush countryside that is accented by hills, colorful adobe homes and bright, ocean blue sky.

In between treatments and yoga sessions, I spent time relaxing in my adobe casita or walking the grounds sampling the scents of fresh sage and thyme. Evenings were spent sweating out toxins in the mesquite wood burning sauna and gathering for delectable organic gourmet meals. Additionally, retreats offer guided hikes  and optional excursions into the town of San Miguel to explore its architecture and history.

Every aspect of Sagrada—the treatments, healers, and majestic land—nourished me from the inside out. As I boarded my flight home, I noticed the remarkable difference in how I felt—energized, less stressed, and filled with gratitude for my sacred time at Sagrada.

Immerse yourself in yoga, horseback riding, Spanish and cooking classes and holistic healing in San Miguel

On 15 acres of rural Central Mexico mountainside sits the eco-conscious Sagrada Wellness, a boutique hotel and yoga retreat, where guests are immersed in everything from holistic health and cooking classes to yoga, Spanish classes, spa treatments, art and horseback riding. Architect Scott Currie and his wife, Eva Inglizian, a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, created the Sagrada after living in San Miguel de Allende for a year and yearning for a peaceful refuge to call their own and practice their crafts: sustainable architecture and Eastern medicine.

Yoga and Pilates retreats begin in the morning in the open-aired yoga studio with a proper sun salutation overlooking the expansive hills. Afternoon sessions are usually dedicated to the stretching and core-strengthening practices of Pilates. All classes are tailored to guests and take into consideration various levels of expertise.

Winter Solstice at Sagrada

While living in Los Angeles , Eva and Scott had searched all over the United States and Mexico to find just the right place to set down roots to create their dreamed-of wellness center. They were drawn to the exotic high desert landscape of Mexico . The moment they set foot on it, they knew this was the place. The whole area felt sacred to them, so they named it “Sagrada.”

Sagrada invites guest instructors throughout the year to teach yoga, Pilates, art and cooking classes and to facilitate in a variety of retreats blending both Eastern and Western therapeutic approaches.

With a contemplative focus on nourishing food, deep breathing, acupuncture, massage, and quiet walks along stone paths with mountain views, each hour is filled with life. “We are a sanctuary,” says Eva. “We want guests to completely relax, enhance their physical, emotional and spiritual health; and reconnect with themselves and with nature.”
